Some guiding thoughts

Hello, punkers.

Taffety Punk is an artist run company. All work emanates from the core company. All decisions are made to support their work.

We know how difficult and frustrating it can be to submit your resume, play, demo, or design portfolio and then not hear anything. So, to make things easier, we want to offer some honest guidelines about what we're about, what kind of work we do, how to submit, and what to expect from us. Artists should know these things. Everyone should, really, but (especially if you clicked here) we expect you're a kindred soul looking for a dance partner.

The best thing you can do to get to know us is to come to some of our shows. Volunteering is another very good way. We need lots of help. For now, the help we need tends to come in sporadic and frenzied bursts. So let us know if you're interested in that sort of thing.

What we're about

We think of ourselves as a band, and the most important thing for us is to sustain the well-being and artistic development of the artists in the band. Most of the work we do is self-generated, and naturally we start all projects with our own folks in mind. So, if we say "no" it is absolutely nothing personal. It's just what we do. That being said, we do occasionally open the door to guest artists. So...

If you can't come to a show, research our previous productions. Our production archives are available here  and soon we will be posting a  complete with photos, reviews, press releases, and more. Our mission statement is here; that's important, for obvious reasons. While perusing the images and text and sounds of our archives, we like to think that you will discover this about us:

The kind of work we do

We are attracted to work where the focus is on the performer, where the material provides opportunities to exploit music and dance, and where our core company members can work together. Additionally, we also tend to be attracted to classical, epic, or challenging material; we enjoy stories that aren't bound by realism; and we actively try to keep the design requirements simple, or at least very cheap.

Getting involved

Street Team

We love volunteers, but there is a particular set of volunteers who are extra extra special to us. These are the members of the street team. It's a simple task. Before a show opens, we host a small party where you can all hang out and receive posters, post cards, fliers and other propaganda. Then we ask that you take these items to your neighborhood and put them in cafes, record shops, book stores, shop windows, public bulletin boards, and all sorts of places. Help us help the world know how to find us. It's easy and in return you get mad love from the punks. Contact us at volunteer@taffetypunk.com for more info about the Street Team.

Volunteers

Did we mention we love volunteers? We do. Volunteeers are cool. Especially helpful volunteers win crazy loyalty from us. If you're interested, send an email to volunteer@taffetypunk.com or a letter to us at PO Box 15392 Washington, DC 20003. Tell us what sort of things you'd like to help with: construction and painting, house management and ushering, running crew, paperwork and mailings, hanging posters, computer projects, party set ups, and anything else.

Apprenticeships, and Internships

This could be you. Please send a resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO Box 15392 Washington, DC 20003 and we'll see. If you are still in school, help us connect with your school as well; let's see if we can make the internship count for some kind of class credit. Local inquiries are best as we cannot provide housing or compensation at this time. Of course if you have a resourceful solution for that then by all means contact us.

Board of Trustees

As a 501(c)3 non-profit company, we rely on our trustees to nurture and advise us. These are the good folks that take their work very seriously: to promote, provide, and protect. If you are interested in joining our trustees, please call us at (202) 415-4838, or  email us at info@taffetypunk.com. We would love to talk to you.

Sponsors

None of our work would be possible without the beautiful and gracious support of our donors and sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a show, or a company member, please call us at (202) 415-4838, or  email us at info@taffetypunk.com. We would love to talk to you about artists, and how to support them.

Playwrights

Please know, for reasons mentioned above, that we don't often go outside of our own company of artists to look for material.

When we do we are attracted to work where the focus is on the performer, where the material provides opportunities to exploit music and dance, and where our core company members can work together. Additionally, we also tend to be attracted to classical, epic, or challenging material; we enjoy stories that aren't bound by realism; and we actively try to keep the design requirements simple, or at least very cheap.

We'd like to think this warning wasn't necessary, but loading a play with f-bombs, blood, fornication, and substance abuse does not automatically make it a "punk" play. It's probably best not to chase the "punk" thing at all since the word defies containment, and it means a lot of different things to a lot of people. We know what it means to us.

So, consider your work against all of the above thoughts and ask yourself honestly if you think this is a good match. If you do….

How to submit
Send a one-page synopsis of the play and a ten-page sample to submission@taffetypunk.com. Please do not send us a hard copy of these things. We won't read them. Please do not send us the whole play first. We won't read that, either.

What to expect
Two company members will read the synopsis and the sample. If they decide the work exists outside Taffety Punk's aesthetic purview, they will write back to you and tell you so. If they are interested in reading more, we will request a full copy (electronic or hard copy) and bring it before the core company. After that we can't make any promises. Much time may go by between a submission and a response. This is usually because we are all very busy in rehearsal.

Either way, we'll write back to you. But we ask for your patience in the process.

Performers

Remember that our first priorities are our Company Members. We don't hold terribly many auditions. But when we do, we are especially attracted to actors and dancers who have classical training and experience, coupled with some punk know-how. Punk-ness is a difficult thing to describe for sure, but it's where we come from. Don't chase down the idea of it, or you'll go mad. Many people are punk who don't know it yet. And some self-proclaimed  punks are about as phoney as can be. And your punk is different from our punk and on and on. So.... now that we've muddled that up, how about this? Let us know you're out there. Let us know if you're in a show. We like shows.

How to submit
ACTORS: please send headshot & resume to casting@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: Casting. Please tell us whether or not you also dance, sing, or play music. And it couldn't hurt to tell us about your next performance. We like shows.

DANCERS: please send headshot and resume to casting@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: Casting. Please tell us whether or not you also act, sing, or play music. And it couldn't hurt to tell us about your next performance. We like shows. Especially dance!

MUSICIANS: please send a demo, or a sample, or link to your music, to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: Music. Please tell us whether or not you also act, or dance. And whether or not your compose your own material. And when your band is playing

What to expect
To be honest, you may never hear back from us. Though we would like to send everyone a card to thank them for their submission, it's just a lot to ask of an already overtaxed bunch of folks. We will save your information and keep an eye out. Do let us know if you're in a show.

Choreographers

Please send a resume, demo (or link) to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, attn: production. Are you also a performer? Got any shows coming up? Tell us! Always interested in new choreography.

Composers

Music is a big part of what we're all about. Please send a demo (physical or link) and a resume to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003. Are you also a performer? Tell us. Got any shows coming up? Tell us.

Directors

We do want to know you're out there. But please know, for reasons mentioned above, that we don't often go outside of our own family of artists. Of course, "don't go often" doesn't mean "never" so send resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, and label it ATTN: Production.

Designers

We definitely want to know you! Send resume and portfolio link to production@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003,  and label it ATTN: Production. Tell us if you're in or near DC. Tell us if you've got anything going on that you're especially proud of. We want to see it. Thanks.

Technical Production Support

scenic artists, run crew, stage management, board ops

We are always happy to meet experienced stage managers and assistant stage managers. Please let us know you're out there. Just before almost every show opens, a whirlwind of scenic design work is usually needed — construction, painting, costume assistance, lighting assistance, and more. And during a show, we need folks off stage to help help the show run. If you'd like to help us out in any of these areas, please send resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003, and label it ATTN: Production. Let us know what sort of things you're skilled at or interested in doing. Thanks.

Administration

There are no paid administrative positions available at this time. However, we do often need administrative help. Please let us know if you'd like to volunteer. Send resume to info@taffetypunk.com or to PO BOX 15392 WDC 20003,  and label it ATTN: Volunteers. Tell us what sort of things you'd like to help with: house management and ushering, running crew, paperwork and mailings, hanging posters, computer projects, party set ups, construction and painting, and anything else. Thanks.
